Summary
WALSALL 1 LEYTON ORIENT 0 WHAT a start! New signing Adam Chambers - the boy from the Black Country - became an instant hit with the Walsall fans by scoring a magnificent winner on his debut, and the super strike was against his old side Orient. The former Baggies midfielder, released by the Londoners at the end of last season, scored with a 30-yard blockbuster in the 21st minute which proved enough to clinch all three points, despite a determined late onslaught from the visitors Orient boss Russell Slade groaned: "He never got a goal for us last season and seemed to get a nosebleed if he was anywhere near the box. But I'm pleased for him because he's a great pro and he will do a magnificent job for Walsall, so all credit to him. There was an option for him to stay with us for one more year, but I think the lure of a two-year contract at Walsall, knowing Dean Smith well, and his family being from this area, made his decision."
Saddlers' manager Smith was delighted with Chambers and said: "I was amazed Orient let him go, because I know what he is about. But I'm not sure whether he's about 30-yard shots into the top corner!" With four new men in the line-up, Walsall made the early running but there was an anxious moment in the first minute when Orient defender Ben Chorley caught Claude Gnakpa's ankle. Fortunately the powerful winger was able to continue after treatment.See the full content of this document
