Summary
ANONYMOUS (12A) CAST: Rhys Ifans, Rafe Spall, David Thewlis, Vanessa Redgrave PLOT: It surrounds the highly controversial assertion that Stratford-upon-Avon's William Shakespeare was not the greatest-ever playwright but a blackmailing illiterate fraud. The real author was Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, played as a young man by Jamie Campbell Bower (fresh from playing another English icon, Merlin) and then by Ifans. Other new 'facts' are that, far from being the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I (Redgrave) had several illegitimate children and was even involved in incest.
GOOD POINTS: The performances are good, especially from Spall who provides some much-needed light relief as Shakespeare. And it does showcase how brilliant the plays are, whoever wrote them. It actually builds to a pretty good finale, but just because it ends well, it doesn't mean all's well.See the full content of this document
