Settling quickly after following manager Steve Bruce up from Crystal Palace, Gray was steadily enhancing his reputation as a left- sided player of high calibre. Deployed at left-back in a goalless draw with Manchester United at St Andrew's, he marked Cristiano Ronaldo out of the game. There was talk of England.
